History

The Grande Prairie Gymnastics Society

The Grande Prairie Gymnastics Society (GPGS) was founded in 1973 by a dedicated group of parents, including Dr. Bob Waldenberger and Diana (Kuhlman) Tissington, who shared a deep passion for gymnastics. This vision for a strong gymnastics community was further strengthened by Bethe Goldie, a retired Physical Education instructor at Grande Prairie Regional College, who laid the foundation for the club’s legacy of coaching excellence. In 1980, the club officially became a registered society.

Initially, the club trained in multipurpose spaces, where equipment had to be set up and taken down for each session. The GPRC  gymnasium served as the Society’s first training location. Over the years, the club grew and moved to a 3,000-square-foot facility in Richmond Industrial Park and eventually expanding further with the acquisition of a 10,000-square-foot warehouse in the industrial park—becoming the club’s first dedicated gymnastics space.

In September 2005, the Grande Prairie Gymnastics Society took a major step forward with the opening of our state-of-the-art, 50,000-square-foot gymnastics training center. One of the largest of its kind in the world, this world-class facility reflects our commitment to providing top-tier training for gymnasts of all ages and abilities.

Over the years, the Grande Prairie Gymnastics Society has produced numerous accomplished athletes and continues to foster a strong, supportive community of gymnasts, coaches, and families, all while maintaining a legacy of excellence and dedication to the sport.

Leadership Staff

Grande Prairie Gymnastics is a proud not-for-profit society, driven by a passion for gymnastics and community.

Our organization is governed by a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors, made up of seven committed individuals who work together to support and guide our mission.

As a not-for-profit, our focus is on creating accessible, high-quality programs that benefit athletes of all ages and skill levels. The Board of Directors plays a key role in overseeing the operations, making decisions that help us grow, and ensuring that we stay true to our values of excellence, inclusivity, and community support.

We are grateful for the time and expertise our Board members contribute, as they help steer the direction of Grande Prairie Gymnastics and ensure our programs remain impactful for athletes and families throughout the region.
